Summer Solstice and Boże Ciało (Corpus Christi)

June 24, 2011 by Lois Britton 2 Comments

The summer solstice has come and gone, so our very long days are getting shorter.  It’s light out long before we get up at 5:30, and often there is still a glow in the sky when we go to bed.  Everyone stays out so late enjoying the sun and beautiful weather.  I think the entire country must be sleep deprived in the summer and make up for it in the dark, gloomy days of winter.

People in Poznan got into the Guinness World Records book this year on June 21st  They sent sent up balloon-like lanterns from one of the bridges.  I’ve seen different figures – 8,000, 10,000, 12,000 – anyway it’s a new world’s record.  It looks beautiful.  It would have been great to be there, but we didn’t know about it.  Thanks to David for mentioning it in his blog.

Yesterday, was a national/church holiday, so most businesses were closed.  (Based on my daily bike ride, it appears that since no one could go to the mall,  they all went to Lake Malta,)  The Feast of the Body of Christ is celebrated 60 days after Easter.  Our friends who live near the Stary Browar (Old Brewery)  mall said the parade came down their street and they were able to watch it from their apartment.  The children scattered rose petals on the street to signify that Christ is walking with us and with them in the parade.

Obviously, wild fires are not the concern they are in Arizona right now.

    I love the lanterns video.
And it's crazy how long days are in Poland in the Summer. My dad loves fishing and according to him you can still see some glow at 11:15 pm and it starts dusking at 2:45 – this is when he wakes up to go fishing.
