My friend, Klaudia, recommended a cookbook to me, but I hadn’t had a chance to order it. She said it was written by a well-known American journalist who is married to a Polish diplomat. A few weeks later, my favorite source of Polish news in English, New Poland Express, was having a competition, the prize was an English copy of From a Polish Country House Kitchen by Anne Applebaum and Danielle Crittenden, the book Klaudia had recommended.
I was thrilled to find out I was the lucky winner, and I’ve been pouring over the book for the last few weeks. The photography is fantastic, the narrative that goes with each recipe is full of details that make you feel like you’re sitting around the kitchen table with the authors – kind of like a food blog.
I’ve made two recipes from the book for dinner tonight, and while I was cooking, I decided to commit myself to making all of the recipes in the book. I thought it would be a good way to fill my time during this, my last year in Poland. My friend Rob, chef at the Curious Kumquat in Silver City says that’s a great way to learn. I’ll be posting two dishes later today, and weekly on Mondays. I hope you’ll check back and follow my progress.
Like bake-alongs I’ve done in the past, you won’t find the recipes in these blog posts – just photos and our comments on the dishes. Hopefully, they’ll tempt you to buy the book. Unless you’re a member of my family; many of you will be getting a copy for Christmas!
