First Attempt at Macarons

April 30, 2011 by Lois Britton 9 Comments

I’ve been a Heavenly Cake baker for over a year now.  Many of Rose’s recipes will call for just egg yolks, or just egg whites.  Every time I put egg whites in my freezer, I tell myself, I should try making macarons.  I finally did.  Inspired by a recent trip to Paris which could best be described as a macaron spree.

From a bakery/cafe near our hotel
Ladurée – my brother’s favorite

After reading several recipes online, I tried David Lebovitz’s French Chocolate Macaron recipe.  My technique needs work.  I had a few turn out close to right.  They were a little too domed and a little too crisp, but it’s not so intimidating now.

Congratulations!.. you did what I been wanting to do every time I open my freezer and see the container marked “egg whites’ as well!

Even the bad and the ugly do not look so bad…

Lois, they look fantastic! I am also a fan of Laduree’s, but I’m pretty sure I’d choose yours over theirs. Being a little domed made them more appealing to me. Maybe because I think it would make them a little lighter. Send a batch and I’ll critique them for you. 😉

You are so brave! They look wonderful. I can’t believe how intimidating it is to make these things. I’ve been putting it off forever even though Faithy says it isn’t so hard. After the final cake I’ll have to give it a go.

They look SO good. I’m going to get my nerve up to try them one of these days. I’ve never had a macaron so I’ll be able to tell myself that they’re perfect.

Even the ugly look good enough for me! I’m so glad someone is giving a go to the “it” dessert of the year. You’ve inspired me to give it a try too.

Well, I think it is time I faced all of those egg whites in my freezer. Thanks for the inspiration. I am not crazy about macaroons, but yours look great! I can always gift them and maybe I will like grow to enjoy one or two.
