Our trips home always include a visit to our dentist, but six months back and I was having trouble with an old filling. There is a dental office on the ground floor of an neighboring apartment building, so for the first time last week, I visited a Polish dentist.
The office and equipment were very modern, sleek, and totally white, with a large flat screen TV playing quietly within the patient’s view – a nice distraction.
The dentist, her assistant, and the receptionist were all so young, mid- twenties, I’m guessing. But then, our stateside dentist and his staff were on the young side when we started going there twenty-plus years ago. We’ve grown old together.
My old filling was replaced with a more modern material, but the next day, I found that I couldn’t floss behind the tooth. It was like the filling was also attached to the tooth behind it.
They were able to fit me in and were relieved that my “problem” wasn’t pain in the tooth. The doctor had warned me that if it continued, I would need to see an endodontist.
She was also unable to work floss behind my tooth, but a little emery cloth and I was good to go. The dentist said that sometimes the coating that goes on top runs further than intended. This should have been checked before I left the chair on my first visit, but I realize how needing to speak and think in a foreign language can be enough of a distraction that it would disrupt one’s normal routine. I’m just grateful that I didn’t need to use the translator app on my phone – an advantage of a young dentist! She laughed and said, “at least I know you floss!”.
I had to chuckle too and add in mock horror, “I know, what if it had been a month before I discovered it?!” I would have been too embarrassed and would have found a different dentist to fix it!
As I paid for my filling on the first visit (about the cost of a co-pay at home), I complimented their facility which led to my dentist giving me a tour. On one side of the reception area is the dental clinic, on the other is a spa – a few rooms for mani-pedi, massage, facial, waxing, etc.
This is good to know because when Ed was in the hospital looking at his swollen feet, showing the damage from a staph infection, I promised him a pedicure as soon as he was healed up. We’re almost there! Might well book an appointment for two while I’m at it. 😉
