Tiramisu with Homemade Ladyfingers

September 5, 2011 by Lois Britton 10 Comments

Heavenly Cake Baker Submission #60

It’s free choice this week for the Heavenly Cake Bakers, and Tiramisu is a favorite in our household, so I had to give it a try.  I made the ladyfingers Sunday night.

They’re basically very fluffy egg yolks, fluffy egg whites, and a little flour and sugar.  The batter is piped and baked.  The little cakes are light and tender – a great on their own or as a base for other ingredients.

The rest of the tiramisu begins with a marsala flavored custard.  The next step is adding mascarpone, and then whipped cream.

The ladyfingers are dipped in sweetened espresso and then layers with the custard/mascarpone/cream mixture.  The final touch is a light dusting a cocoa.
Rather than make this is a 9 x 13 inch pan.  I decided to make it in 3 loaf pans – easier to share with lots of friends. Of course, there was also a little dish for us to taste.  It was a wonderful combination of flavors and textures – a recipe that we’ll definitely make again.

Unlike my other blog posts, as part of the Heavenly Cake Bakers, I don’t post recipes from this book on the Internet. One of the reasons for this baking group is to encourage readers to purchase the cookbook. That strategy worked on me! After follow the group’s baking adventures for a couple of months, I ordered a copy from Amazon because I wanted to join in.

great idea to make three separate tiramisus, and your polish pottery is so pretty. your ladyfingers look perfect! i am looking forward to tackling this in the near future.

These look great! And delicious! I love tiramisu but always thought it looked pretty complicated (I guess it’s because of the multiple steps with baking and assembly… or maybe just because the flavors are somewhat complex so it seems fussier). But you make this look easy. As usual, I’m inspired, and I love that you thought to make a few small cakes rather than one big one.

ButterYum – I may have a pottery obsession going. 🙂

ECL – My Wilton decorating class is paying off when I have to pipe something.

Laura – I thought about posting an after view of my kitchen sink. It seemed like every bowl in the flat was dirty. It’s not complicated – just time and dish consuming.
