November 11 – Veterans Day

November 10, 2012 by Lois Britton 3 Comments

November 11th is Independence Day in Poland – celebrated more enthusiastically here in Poznan as St. Martin’s Day, the name’s day for our main street. Last year was the first time I was here for the festivities and to enjoy the local pastry reserved for this day. You can read all about it here. We’ll miss the parade this year, we’re in Ireland spending time with our niece and her boyfriend. There will be sightseeing, golf for the guys, and a spa day for the girls. We may even find time to tour a distillery or brewery while we’re here.

As I watch the BBC news, everyone has been sporting a red poppy on the lapel for the last week. My English friend, Caroline, usually changes her facebook profile photo to a red poppy too. The British Commonweath and many other countries use this symbol as a sign that they are remembering war dead today on Remembrance or Armistise Day.

For Americans, November 11th is Veterans Day, so as I try to decide which photo of my veteran to use as my profile pic, let me express my gratitude for those who have served and wish Godspeed to those serving today.
