Yesterday was the 57th anniversary of the Poznan Uprising, the first of several protests against the communist government because of the very poor economy. 100,000 people demonstrated in the city center. In response, the government sent in 10,000 troops and 400 tanks. They opened fire on the protesting civilians. There are conflicting reports on the number of dead. The Gazeta put the figure at over 100, with hundreds more injured.
