the berry before it’s opened |
One of the nice things about being a vendor at a farmer’s market is the opportunity to regularly shop the other market vendors. Besides picking up great produce at the Phoenix Public Market, I’ve also purchased some bean to bar chocolate from nutwhats and an unusual planter made from concrete and perlite and filled with succulents.
We’ve also come across an item I’ve seen before, usually as a dessert garnish in an upscale restaurant, the pichuberry. Also known as the Inca berry, this South American gem adds a striking architectural element as well as being full of vitamins.
The berry, which grows in a papery casing or calyx, resembles a marble sized yellow tomato in appearance and texture – being full of soft little seeds. The taste is sweet and tart at the same time – somewhat like a kiwi.
If you’re looking for a way to take your dessert plating from good to grand and memorable, look for this strange little berry at your farmers market, I’ve seen them in several around AZ and CA.
